Japan has withdrawn from this summer's Copa America tournament and World Cup champion Spain has been invited as a possible replacement.
Japan and Mexico were invited as guest countries for the South American event, but Japan has withdrawn as the country continues to deal with the aftermath of an earthquake and tsunami in early March that led to a nuclear crisis.
Spanish football federation president Angel Maria Villar revealed that Spain had received an invitation, and the proposal would be taken to the board.
With just 11 teams currently in the tournament, the Copa - which features each of the 10 South American countries - needs one more team to fill out the three groups of four teams apiece.
The tournament, being held in Argentina, starts July 1.
